Candidate Responses - Joy Gibson

In addition to answering the 20 survey questions, this candidate provided the following elaboration on several progressive issues.

Seeking to provide a quality public education for all children, as guaranteed by our State Constitution:

I strongly support adequately funding public schools first. However, in cases where charter schools are the best educational option for students in low-income neighborhoods, I believe that they should be held to the same standards and be 100% accountable.

Seeking justice and equality for all:

I support the ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment. In no case should anyone for any reason be treated differently under the law. Women deserve the sole right to make choices concerning their bodies in any matter. Jails and prisons should not be used for private gain of any form. We must focus on reform and rehabilitation of in-mates as they may one day return to our society.

Seeking recognition of the fundamental right to affordable housing, health care and retirement security:

I support creative reuse of abandoned properties to reduce homelessness. I believe this is a great use of resources.

Seeking a clean and safe environment:

We have done unrepairable damage to our coastlines and we must work to preserve our diverse ecosystems.
