Candidate Responses - Kristen Carlson
In addition to answering the 20 survey questions, this candidate provided the following elaboration on several progressive issues.
Seeking a fair, honest, and open government that works for all:
The unregulated flow of anonymous corporate money is detrimental to our democratic process. I would support efforts to overturn the Citizens United ruling.
Seeking broader rights and better wages for workers:
A livable wage is critical to maintaining and growing our middle class. I support the fight for $15 movement and believe that we should index the minimum wage. Strong workers’ rights and benefits are important to protecting the middle class and workers. As a member of Congress, I will work to protect the hard-won benefits that workers depend on. I support expanding access to PK3 and ensuring that Florida has a high-quality Pre-K and early childhood education program.
Seeking to maintain a strong economy:
I fully support encouraging in-sourcing. We need quality, high-paying jobs for Americans and one way to achieve that is to encouraging support for American businesses and their products. Corporations and the 1% must pay their fair share. Infrastructure is critical to our economy, especially in district 15. I support funding major improvements and repairs in our infrastructure system that has been neglected for too long.
Seeking to provide a quality public education for all children, as guaranteed by our State Constitution:
I support expanding access to vocational and technical training programs. College is far too expensive. We need our elected officials to work to reduce the costs and make college more accessible.
Seeking justice and equality for all:
As a former prosecutor, I do not support the use of for-profit prisons in our justice system. Everyone deserves equal pay for equal work. It is a critical we address pay gap among all workers. I am a lifelong supporter of Planned Parenthood and a women's right to choose. As a member of congress, I will fight to protect this right. We need protections against regressive regulations that attempt to deny women the right to make their own healthcare decisions.
Seeking recognition of the fundamental right to affordable housing, health care and retirement security:
I support improving the Affordable Care Act to expand access to quality healthcare and contain costs. I support reducing the age of Medicare eligibility from 65 to 55 to help lower premiums. Medicare should be able to negotiate prescription drug prices and lower the cost to taxpayers and patients. Importing prescription medication from outside the country can be done safely and save consumers money.
Seeking a clean and safe environment:
We need to embrace strategies that will reduce carbon emissions. Specifically, I believe district 15 is a prime location for energy efficient transportation including high-speed rail. The environment is critical to the health of Floridians and to our state's economy. We must put aside the partisan politics preventing us from protecting our environment.
Seeking a peaceful and secure world:
Diplomacy and statesmanship are critical to our safety and should be embraced whenever possible to keep our country safe and our troops out of harm’s way. Methods used in enhanced interrogation including water boarding are torture and are not compatible with our American values. Our law enforcement officers need the resources necessary to protect our communities and keep themselves safe; however, our police shouldn't have the look or feel of a military presence.
